The world’s consumption of explosives is about 18190 Kilo-tons in a year and India alone uses about 15,00,000 tonnes of explosives in a year. The majority of these explosives are used in the form of (a) bulk ANFO, (b) bulk and package water gel and (c) bulk and package emulsion products.

All these three forms of commercial explosives are necessarily physical mixtures of a number of chemicals. More simply said, different chemicals are mixed intimately to manufacture a good quality explosive.

This physical mixture of chemicals is an explosive material, but it is like a skeleton which need muscles to keep it healthy and in shape so that the shaped explosive becomes handle-able for (a) storage, (b) transport and (c) delivery (inserting) into the blast holes in the mines.

Various types of thickeners are used to build these muscles into the skeleton of the explosive mixtures. Some commonly used thickeners are guar gum and other natural polysaccharides.

Guar gum is the first choice for manufacturers of slurry explosives. Important reasons for such a choice are, (a) its ability to form viscous colloidal solutions in an aqueous medium, (b) its inherent characteristics to maintain the viscosity, thus developed over a good period of time (months), and (c) its nonhazardous nature.

Fluctuations both in its (a) availability and (b) prices are always a concern. Therefore, the manufacturers of water gel explosives are always in search for substitutes to guar gum.

  2. Innopowder can replace the same percentage of guar gum in water gel formulations. That means if someone is using 0.8% of guar gum then Innopowder can also be used in the same 0.8% level.
  3. Innopowder and Innoquous can be used in combination, too, in the same formulation.In such use pattern, (a) the total percentage of water in the explosive formulation is replaceable by Innoquous and (b) guar gum is reduced by 50% with the replacement of 50% of Innopowder. That means if guar gum was used earlier in 0.8% level then the changed composition would be at 0.4% guar gum + 0.4% Innopowder + Innoquous”. Introduction of Innoquous will replace the use of water in the explosive formulation.
